Laura F. Hazlett, Ph. D., Principal

 

Laura Hazlett began her academic career as an Assistant Professor of Finance for the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University in 2004. Her teaching interests included investments, market microstructure, and behavioral finance; her research interests were in the areas of market microstructure and behavioral finance, in particular, in the role that psychology plays in financial markets and its impact on asset prices. Her publications include: “Investor and Price Response to Patterns in Earnings Surprises”, 2008, *Journal of Financial Management*, “Spam Works: Evidence from Stock Touts and Corresponding Market Activity”, 2007, *Berkman Center Research Publication* and 2008, *Hastings Communications & Entertainment Law Journal*, “Brand Perceptions and the Market for Common Stock,” 2005, *Journal of Financial & Quantitative Analysis*; and “On Non-Secular Regularities in Trading and Stock Returns,” *Financial Analysts Journal*, 2004. Dr. Hazlett has spoken on the topic of intelligent investing and avoiding common mistakes. Her research on stock spam was widely featured, including in interviews on National Public Radio and American Public Radio. Her work on stock spam led her to a litigation consulting engagement with the Securities and Exchange Commission. While at Purdue, Dr. Hazlett also worked with the NCAA to understand the benefits of re-classification.

Dr. Hazlett’s interest in the sports industry stems from an internship she had with the Phoenix Suns in public relations in the late nineties. Since that time, Dr. Hazlett has helped coordinate basketball camps for the Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Suns. She has consulted for Maloof Skateboarding, LLC, playing an instrumental role in developing and planning the debut of the Maloof Money Cup, which has since grown from a single event in Orange County, CA to an event of international prominence in South Africa. Dr. Hazlett also played a pivotal strategic role in helping the University of Oregon Athletic Department plan, construct and open its $200 million Matthew Knight Arena.

After obtaining bachelor degrees in Math and Economics from Arizona State University, Dr. Hazlett obtained her PhD in Management from the Anderson School at University of California, Los Angeles.
